All of this is by way of a preamble to introduce the subject of the new album, ‘White Zombie’, recorded at Elfo, a world class studio in Italy with some of the finest musicians and artists I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with including Camillo Mozzoni the lead oboe player of the orchestra of La Scala, Milan and the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Annie Barbazza. The story of the album will be found in the booklet notes and I think I have also mentioned it in previous newsletters so I will just say that it was initially conceived as a soundtrack to the 1932 Bela Lugosi film of the same name (in much the same way that the ‘Hexen’ album grew out of an aborted soundtrack for the silent film ‘Haxan’), but the voodoo chants that I created have been much embellished upon and developed and augmented by new songs that I was persuaded to add and which have taken me to a new level thanks largely to the quality of the facilities and the musicians who were so generous with their time and talent.
The album is being mixed now and should be released in September or October. Further details can be found on the label’s website www.darkcompanion.com (home to Peter Hammill, Keith Tippett and Shelleyan Orphan) and on my Facebook pages together with some interesting photos https://www.facebook.com/RealPaulRoland.
